The band tells you first. BAMS listens.

A retrofit monitoring system for band mills. It keeps the band tracking true by itself, listens for cracks while the saw runs, watches how tight the band is held, and tells you when the wheels are wearing out.

01 Auto-tilt

The saw tracks itself

A sensor watches where the band is sitting on the wheel. When it starts to creep, BAMS trims the wheel tilt to bring it back — the correction a good sawyer makes by feel, made continuously and without opening the door.

A warm frame, a fresh band, tension coming off over a long cut: all of it moves tracking, and all of it is taken out before it reaches the cut.

02 Crack watch

Find the crack, not the wreckage

A cracked gullet sings before it splits. A listening head on the guide hears it through the running band, and because BAMS knows where the weld is, it can tell you roughly where on the band the trouble sits — not just that something is wrong somewhere.

The whole band passes that head every few seconds, so nothing goes uninspected. A crack that grows over a few shifts arrives as a trend, not a bang.

The band moves past a fixed listening point, so one head inspects all of it each revolution — and counting from the weld turns a noise into a place.

03 Tightness

Tension you can read, not guess

BAMS measures in the tension path itself, between the cylinder and the wheel, so what you see is the force actually in the band — not what the old gauge says. It holds that against the window you want to run in.

Slow drift as the frame warms, a sag after a band change, a jump when the feed bites: each looks different, and each can raise its own flag.

Because the measurement sits inside the load path, wear in the cylinder or stiction in the yoke can't hide from the reading.

04 Wheel wear

The wheels tell on themselves

Nobody measures wheel crown between shifts. But a wheel going flat needs more and more tilt to hold the band in the same place — and BAMS has been keeping that number since the day it was fitted.

When the trend starts to run away, you get a service window in weeks rather than a broken band on a Friday afternoon. Plan the regrind, order the tyre, book the fitter.

Wheel wear has no sensor of its own — it shows up as the correction the loop keeps adding. Read the trend, and the wheels tell you when they want grinding.

Fitting

It goes on the mill you already have

BAMS is a retrofit. The kit mounts to the frame as it stands, runs on ordinary panel power and one network cable, and learns your saw before it starts judging it.

  1. Step one

    Mount

    Sensors go on the tension path, the upper guard, the guide and the wheel shaft. Brackets for the usual frames; specials made to suit.

  2. Step two

    Wire

    Everything lands on one gateway box — power in, one cable to the mill panel, and a contact for stopping the saw if you want it.

  3. Step three

    Teach

    Run a known-good band for a few minutes. BAMS takes that as normal, so what it flags later is measured against your mill, not a factory default.

The tilt trim has been climbing since spring. The crown on the upper wheel is going flat, and on this trend it reaches the service line in a few weeks. Worth booking the regrind before the autumn shutdown.
